Asbury Music Ministry News

In The News
From Robert Young, Updated September 1, 2008

Whether it is toddlers, preschool, kindergarten through elementary, middle school, high school, or all level of adults, Asbury has the music opportunities for you and those you love.

The Children and Youth Music Ministries are coordinated by the Directors of Children and Youth Choirs, Kelli Fox, Director of GLORY (God's Littlelist Octave Ringing Youth) [Toddlers, some Singing and some Ringing], Amy Jones & Leigh Ann McGee, Directors of the Cherub Choir [Kindergarten through second grade, Singing Choir]; Ashley King, Pam Ollinger & Mary Beth Bradshaw, Directors of the Krazy Kidz Gang [Grades 3-5: Bell Choir, Singing Choir]; and Sharon Birch and Robert Young, Directors of Celebration [Grades 6-8 Bell Choir & Singing Choir]. We have planned a wonderful season for your children for the 2008/09 season. All six of these choirs meet on Tuesday's after school, at Asbury Church, with a light dinner and supervised homework area offered at the same time. GLORY is at 5:00-5:30, Cherubs are at 5:30-6:00, Krazy Singers are at 4:30-5:15 with Krazy Ringers at 5:15-6:00, Celebration singers at 5:45-6:30 and Celebration Ringers at 6:30-7:30. Lite Dinner & supervised homework area offered in the Soul Cafe from 5:00-6:45. Every Tuesday, bring your children, you will be sorry you did not do it sooner, and we promise, they will want to return.

The Adult Music Ministries are coordinated by me, Robert Young, with many wonderful opportunities. The Asbury Chancel Choir is the largest choir in the church with about 40 members, singing primarily at the 11 AM worship hour, and rehearsing on Thursday evenings from 7:15 to about 9:00 PM. They do all kinds of music, have all kinds of fun, and even remain appropriately pietistic for their Sunday Morning 11 AM worship services. This season includes Daniel Pinkham's "Christmas Cantata" with brass, a casual Christmas Concert on Friday, December 12, and the choir will be featured in the Christ Church Concert Series, Sunday, April 19 at 4 PM. If you want to sing with an award winning choir, this is the one for you. They won second place among 25 other choirs, in the Community of Choirs Competition this past spring. They are ready for an excellent season, you will want to be part of it.

Other adult opportunities include Jubilate Bells, rehearsing on Thursday evenings at 5:30-6:30; Chiming Belles (mature ladies), chime choir rehearsing on Wednesday evenings at 5:15-6:00 PM; the Asbury Orchestra which I talk more about below; The Praise Band which leads the casual worship service on Sunday Mornings, at 8:45 in Fellowship Hall, they rehearse every Monday evening at 7:00-8:00 PM in Fellowship Hall; One Voice which is a select group of singers who perform various genres of music; and the Festival Choir which I talk about below also.

The Asbury Orchestra invites its new conductor, Jeffrey Schoyen on Sunday, September 14. The orchestra was founded about five years ago by Virginia Russell who retired in May, and has grown to about 25 members. They rehearse every second Sunday of the month at 12:30 in the Sanctuary, and lead the 11 AM Worship Hour on the third Sunday of each month.

Festival Choir is a NEW short-term opportunity for musicians who enjoy singing music of faith, but for various reasons cannot make a regular, weekly commitment to a choir. The Festival Choir is an opportunity to sing with the Chancel Choir for specific festival Sundays, with alimited amount of rehearsal time preceding each service. You are invited to sing for just one of the listed Festival Sundays, or all of them or pick and choose. Sundays designated for Festival Choir are All Saints Sunday, November 2, Anniversary Sunday, November 9, Lessons & Carols December 12, 10:30 Christmas Eve Service, Easter on April 12.

Finally one of the "primo" ensembles at Asbury, Revelation Ringers, an excellent group of high school students who enjoy ringing bells in and out of worship. Revelation Ringers rehearse on Sundays from 5:00-6:00 pm in the Bell Room.

The Sound Tech's Committee is the organization of the gentlemen who have and are presently supporting this congregation in the area of sound equipment and reinforcement. This committee is offering free training in sound support to folk who would enjoy having that knowledge, being able to assist with sound support in worship services, and as well be available for professional events that need sound support such as weddings and parties/meetings in Fellowship Hall, which would carry a financial reibursement for services rendered.

Finally, I can never end any of my reports without expressing on behalf of this community and my personal thanks to all those that participate so energetically in the music ministries of the congregation, and those who direct all of these fine ensembles. God bless each of you as we strive to love and serve our Lord.
